Candidates for VP of Committees
Larry Sears
School of Nursing
Candidate Biography:
Greetings all! I am Larry Sears, a second-year nurse anesthesia student at Pitt. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and am brand new to Pittsburgh! As an undergraduate, I was heavily involved not only in my university’s Student Nurses Association (SNA) but also on the state and national levels. I held office as UNLV's SNA fundraising director, where I was able to successfully increase raised funds by 155% within my 12-month term. On the state level, I held the executive position of southern regional director, a liaison position between all of the schools of nursing in southern Nevada and the Nevada Nursing Student Association (NVNSA). Nationally, I held an elected delegate position in the National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA), in which I was responsible for voting on bylaws and regulation changes. Since most state and university-level student nurse associations use NSNA as a reference to blueprint their own organizations, the impact of NSNA’s decisions is vast. As a nurse, I worked at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and was a member of the hospital’s global research committee where we were responsible for reviewing and advocating for evidence-based practice changes throughout the entire organization. Lastly, I acted as a peer educator in my unit (cardiothoracic ICU), in which I would work with management and other educators to develop and facilitate department-wide learning sessions on key topics of clinical interest.

Candidate Statement:
VP of Committees is a role that resonates with me as it is all about promoting and ensuring representation of all sorts of student-led committees and organizations across the university. As someone who has struggled to "find their tribe" at times, I’d love to be in a position in which I can support individuals with varying goals and interests and connect them with people who share their vision. As VP of Committees, I am most interested in taking a deep look into the committees and groups that exist on campus, supporting the individual missions and goals of existing committees, and being an advocate for expanding and diversifying the representation of committees and organizations across Pitt’s campus.

Hendy Siahaan
Graduate School of Public and International Affairs
Candidate Biography:
I grew up in a struggling family. I saw my late father striving to support a family as a taxi driver for Blue Bird transportation company and my mother working as a piano teacher until now. After the riot of 1998 in Indonesia, which caused a chaotic economic situation, most of my cousins struggled to get their education, and no one in my family ever obtained an education abroad. My role model and inspiration for me was and always will be my grandfather, a Navy Officer who retired at 58. He was very involved in many values of my life, which were given to me as his legacy, primarily related to self-discipline and always putting family first. That inspired me to join the Indonesia Navy Officer Candidate School in 2011 after completing my Bachelor's Degree in Economics from the University of Jayabaya, Indonesia.

I served my time as a Junior Navy Officer in the Papua region for approximately five years at the 11th Main Naval Base, Merauke. At that time, Merauke Regency was considered a vulnerable conflict area. As a Navy Officer, I must adapt quickly to the new environment. In April 2018, I was grateful to have the opportunity to be transferred to the Indonesian Navy Headquarters.

During my service at the Headquarters, I was often assigned to accompany foreign Navy participants in the Officer Exchange Program. Being an escort and liaison officer for foreign Navy officers from various countries shaped and demanded that I have good interpersonal and communication skills.

Candidate Statement:
If selected as part of the GPSG Executive Board, my primary objective will be to enhance communication and collaboration among graduate and professional students, faculty, and administration. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by our student body, I plan to introduce initiatives to increase access to communications among students and enhance professional development programs. I am particularly passionate about creating a more inclusive environment that supports diversity and equity, ensuring all students have the resources and support they need to thrive.
The Australian-American evangelist Nick Vujicic said, "The greatest reward comes when you give of yourself. It's about bettering the lives of others, being part of something bigger than yourself, and making a positive difference." I am eager to bring my experience, ideas, and passion for student advocacy to the GPSG role. I look forward to contributing to the continued success and growth of our graduate and professional student community.

I am a dual candidate for a Master of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) and a Master of Business Administration (Katz).
I am originally from Los Angeles, California, but I have lived in New Jersey, Illinois, and New Mexico as well. In my last position in New Mexico, I managed a project that distributed $63 million dollars of federal money. In my free time, I like to annoy my cat, hammer at a banjo, and cook.

Candidate Statement:
Most importantly, I will create and maintain accurate financial statements. I will present our budget clearly and comprehensively to our board and other stakeholders. Transparency is also critical. I will ensure that students are aware of financial opportunities available through GPSG, such as travel grants, and will work with the VP of Communications to do so.
